~ Idaho Falls Firefighters Honored with Idaho Medal of Honor for Heroic Canal Rescue

Two Idaho Falls Fire Department senior firefighters, Travis Adams and Jeremy F. Newman, were awarded the prestigious Idaho Medal of Honor today in Boise for their courageous actions during a vehicle crash in Bingham County last year.

The 2026 Idaho Medal of Honor Ceremony, held at the Idaho State Capitol, recognized nine first responders from across the state who demonstrated exceptional valor above and beyond the call of duty. Adams and Newman were among those honored for their bravery and selflessness.

On October 5th, 2025, while off-duty, Adams and Newman received a PulsePoint notification about a two-vehicle collision on a rural Bingham County roadway. One vehicle had veered off the road and landed partially submerged in a canal, trapping all four occupants inside.

Without hesitation, Adams and Newman immediately responded in their personal vehicles to the scene. They arrived before on-duty emergency resources due to the seriousness of the incident and its remote location.

Despite facing dangerous conditions such as moving water, cold temperatures, and an unstable vehicle partially submerged in the canal, the two firefighters entered the frigid water to begin the rescue. They worked quickly to remove each occupant from the vehicle one at a time and carried them through the canal to safety where they could receive medical care.

Fire Chief Johan Olson praised Adams and Newman for their extraordinary courage and selflessness during this rescue mission. He stated that they put their own safety aside to save four lives without hesitation. The entire department is incredibly proud of them and grateful for their heroic actions.

The 2026 Idaho Medal of Honor Ceremony included individual presentations and citations detailing each recipient's heroic actions. An honor guard presentation was also held along with remarks from Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador.

The City of Idaho Falls joins in congratulating Senior Firefighters Adams and Newman on this well-deserved recognition. Their continued commitment to protecting the lives of others is commendable and serves as an inspiration to all.
