~ The City of Idaho Falls has announced that updated impact fees will go into effect on June 1, 2026. This change, approved by the Idaho Falls City Council on April 23, 2026, will transition the city from assessing residential impact fees on a per unit basis to a square footage-based assessment structure.
Impact fees are used to fund the necessary infrastructure and public facilities needed to support new development in the city. This includes parks, transportation systems, and public safety facilities. By implementing impact fees, the city ensures that growth pays for itself rather than placing the burden on existing taxpayers.
Idaho Falls first adopted impact fees in 2022 and has now updated its ordinance to better reflect the size of residential developments and their anticipated demand for public infrastructure and facilities. According to Community Development Services Director Wade Sanner, this updated structure will more accurately assess impact fees based on these factors.

Sanner also emphasized the importance of keeping pace with community needs as Idaho Falls continues to experience steady growth. These impact fees are essential in helping Idaho Falls plan for and accommodate continued growth while maintaining the level of service expected by residents. Some projects that have been funded through impact fees include improvements to Heritage Park, Utah Avenue roadway improvements, and improvements to Holmes Avenue.
