IDAHO FALLS ~ Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper honored longtime community leader Carrie Getty Scheid with the Mayor's Choice Award on Thursday evening. The award recognizes Scheid's exceptional contributions to the city of Idaho Falls.
Established in 2021, the Mayor's Choice Awards aim to acknowledge individuals, businesses, and organizations that have shown outstanding service and dedication to the community. This presentation was held outside of the usual schedule to ensure that Scheid received the recognition she deserved.
Mayor Casper praised Scheid for her impact on Idaho Falls over the past 30 years. She stated, "Carrie has helped shape our city into the vibrant, compassionate, and creative community we know and love today." From her involvement in the arts and animal welfare to civic engagement and philanthropy, Scheid's contributions have been immeasurable.
One of Scheid's notable achievements was her role in revitalizing downtown Idaho Falls. As the former executive director of the Idaho Falls Arts Council, she played a crucial part in leading the $4.5 million restoration of the Colonial Theater and developing the Willard Arts Center. She also supported public art installations throughout downtown, including the well-known art benches.

Scheid's dedication to civic leadership was evident when she was appointed by Mayor Casper in 2016 to serve on the city's Civic Center Advisory Committee. Her decades of expertise and leadership were instrumental in guiding a successful capital campaign for the Frontier Center for Performing Arts lobby expansion. She helped raise $5 million towards a $7.2 million project and oversaw fundraising for Phase 1 renovations of the interior, including new seating.
Beyond her work in the arts, Scheid also made significant contributions to nonprofit organizations throughout Idaho. She helped launch Idaho Gives, one of the state's most successful nonprofit fundraising initiatives, and served on numerous nonprofit boards. Additionally, she played a key role in founding Snake River Animal Shelter and served as a founding board member, providing a safe space for thousands of animals in need.
Scheid's impact extended to the political realm as well. She managed a large email list known as "the Middle," promoting awareness and encouraging a commonsense approach to Idaho politics.
Mayor Casper expressed her admiration for Scheid's dedication, stating, "Carrie has poured her heart and soul into this city. Her leadership has been generous, visionary, and steadfast. We are all better because of her, and I was honored to present her with this award."
Scheid's husband, Jerry, accepted the Mayor's Choice Award for Outstanding Community Enrichment on her behalf at the July 31 Idaho Falls City Council meeting. The community joins Mayor Casper in celebrating Scheid's legacy and thanking her for her tireless efforts in making Idaho Falls a better place for all.
