IDAHO FALLS ~ Idaho Falls, a city known for its snowy winters, is gearing up for the upcoming season with the implementation of their snow removal parking restriction ordinance. Starting on Saturday, November 15th, this ordinance will remain in effect until March 15th to ensure safe and efficient snow removal from over 790 lane miles of roadway.

According to city officials, the parking restrictions will only be enforced during a declared snow event. This occurs when more than 2 inches of snow accumulates on the roads. Once a snow event is declared, plowing will begin based on the city's established priorities. Any vehicles parked on the street during this time may receive a parking citation or be relocated to allow for complete snow removal.

To keep residents informed and prepared for these events, the City of Idaho Falls is strongly encouraging them to sign up for snow removal alerts. These alerts can be received through various methods such as text messages, an interactive snow removal map, website notifications, social media updates from the city's official accounts, and local media coverage.

The interactive snow removal map is particularly useful as it provides real-time information on which streets are scheduled to be plowed, when they were last plowed, and which zones are currently active. This allows residents to track progress and know what to expect during a snow event.

Snow removal operations are divided into three zones: Downtown, Zone A, and Zone B. Downtown streets are typically plowed overnight from midnight to 7 a.m., while Zone A (which includes the center of the city and narrower streets) is usually plowed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The majority of the city falls under Zone B and will be plowed around the clock until all streets are cleared.

City officials also mentioned that plowing may continue even after all streets have been cleared if there is additional snowfall. Within each zone, crews prioritize main routes and high-traffic areas first, followed by residential streets as conditions allow. The starting point and order of plowing are determined by the unique conditions of each storm, including wind direction, temperature, and snow accumulation patterns.

Residents can find more information about snow removal policies, parking zones, and access the interactive snow removal map on the city's website or by contacting the Street Division at 208-612-8490.

As winter approaches, the City of Idaho Falls is taking necessary measures to ensure safe and efficient snow removal for its residents. By following the parking restrictions and staying informed through various alerts and resources, residents can help make this process smoother for everyone.
