IDAHO FALLS ~ On Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025, a fast-moving wildland fire broke out near the lava hiking trail inlet south of Highway 20 in Idaho Falls. The fire, which was estimated to be about 90 acres in size, was reportedly sparked by two individuals engaged in target shooting.
The Idaho Falls Fire Department (IFFD) was the first to respond to the scene with a team of firefighters and several vehicles including a structure engine, Type 6 engine, Type 4 engine, water tender and a battalion chief. Upon arriving at the scene and seeing a large smoke plume from several miles away, the on-scene battalion chief immediately requested additional support from other agencies.
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Ammon Fire Department all responded to the call for assistance. INL sent three Type 4 engines, three water tenders and two battalion chiefs while Ammon Fire Department provided one Type 6 brush truck. BLM took over command of the operation and deployed three Type 4 engines and a super heavy unit. Air support was also activated with two single engine air tankers (SEATs) for retardant drops and a helicopter conducting water drops from a portable tank.

Due to strong winds, the fire quickly spread to the north and east. However, thanks to the swift response and coordinated efforts of all agencies involved, the blaze was contained and is now fully under control. BLM remained on scene overnight to monitor conditions and reassess in the morning.
Unfortunately, during the incident an 81-year-old man who was camping in the area sustained minor burns to both arms while trying to escape the fire. A bystander initially spotted his trailer and attempted to alert him but had to retreat due to advancing flames. IFFD personnel witnessed this event and provided aid before coordinating transport for medical treatment. Sadly, both the camper and his pickup truck were destroyed in the fire.
The IFFD would like to extend their gratitude to all partner agencies for their swift response and coordination in containing the fire. Without their assistance, the situation could have been much worse. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
