IDAHO FALLS ~ Idaho Falls, ID - On May 9th, the City of Idaho Falls held its annual Arbor Day celebration by planting trees with community members and receiving its 33rd consecutive Tree City USA Award. The event took place at Heritage Park, where students from local schools joined Mayor Rebecca Casper, City Council members, and Idaho Falls Parks & Recreation staff to plant 17 trees.
The tree-planting activity not only promoted environmental education but also contributed to the city's ongoing efforts to expand and enhance green spaces. This aligns with the city's commitment to preserving its natural environment and promoting sustainability.
Former Mayor Linda Milam was also present at the event, joining Mayor Casper in commemorating the installation of a new swing in Heritage Park. The swing serves as a tribute to the past mayors of Idaho Falls and their contributions to shaping the city and its parks over the years.
The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the Tree City USA Award from the Arbor Day Foundation. This marks the 33rd consecutive year that Idaho Falls has received this prestigious award, recognizing its strong commitment to urban forest management.

Mayor Rebecca Casper expressed her pride in receiving this award for so many years, stating that it is a testament to Idaho Falls' dedication to environmental stewardship. She also emphasized the importance of involving students in this tradition as it helps them learn about the value of trees and preserving our natural environment.
The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, has four core standards that cities must meet to be recognized: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and hosting an annual Arbor Day observance.
Although Arbor Day is traditionally observed in April, Idaho Falls celebrates in May due to better planting conditions for young trees in their climate. For those interested in learning more about urban forestry programs and planting tips for their own property, they can visit the City of Idaho Falls' website.
