IDAHO FALLS ~ Idaho Falls is gearing up for a night of celebration as the city invites the community to come together for a special event honoring the historic water tower and welcoming the new one. The Water Tower Tribute Block Party, complete with a fireworks show, will take place on Friday, October 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. on Memorial Drive in downtown Idaho Falls.

In partnership with the Idaho Falls Farmers Market and the Idaho Falls Downtown Development Corporation, this free and family-friendly event will offer a variety of activities for attendees to enjoy. These include a special night market, live music, water tower-themed giveaways such as hats, shirts, and stickers, and a local artist creating a live painting of the tower for all to see. Children can also participate in a water tower-themed art project while adults can capture memories at the water tower-themed photo booth.

One unique aspect of this event is the community wall where attendees can share what they love about Idaho Falls. Community leaders will also be present to give remarks and express their appreciation for this iconic landmark. To ensure safety and allow for event setup and takedown, Memorial Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic from 2 to 10 p.m. on Friday, October 10. Residents and visitors are advised to plan ahead, use nearby parking options, and allow extra travel time while enjoying the festivities.

Mayor Rebecca Casper expressed her sentiments about this event saying, "For nearly nine decades, the water tower has served our community and stood as a familiar part of Idaho Falls' skyline." She added that while it may be difficult to say goodbye to such an iconic structure, building a new tower was necessary for public safety and future growth. This celebration serves as an opportunity to honor its history while embracing what lies ahead.

The old water tower was built in 1937 and has been a beloved landmark in the community. However, at 88 years old, it no longer meets current building codes or seismic requirements. The new water tower was constructed to ensure safety, reliability, and sufficient water storage for the city's continued growth.
