Boise, Idaho ~ Boise, Idaho - Governor Brad Little has made a significant move towards supporting families and improving access to quality and affordable childcare options in the state. On Tuesday, he signed Senate Bill 1206, marking the largest investment in childcare outside of pandemic relief funds.
In a statement, Governor Little expressed his enthusiasm for the bill and its potential impact on Idaho families. "This bill is the latest in our efforts to support families and ensure they have quality, affordable childcare options," he said. He also acknowledged that the high cost of childcare is a major burden for young families in Idaho and that it is driven by supply and demand. By partnering with childcare providers to increase capacity, the state hopes to not only increase access but also drive down costs.

The record-setting investment of up to $45 million over three years will be used to expand childcare capacity, while an additional $4.2 million will be allocated for ongoing funding to offset families' direct costs of childcare. This is expected to benefit approximately 500 children.
Governor Little also highlighted his administration's previous commitments to increasing childcare access. Under his leadership, Idaho has already increased the childcare tax deduction to $12,000 per family and allocated $30 million for childcare supply, resulting in an estimated 4,000 new slots at facilities across the state.
With this new bill in place, Idaho is projected to add another 6,000 slots once the funds are fully deployed into communities. Governor Little emphasized that improving access to childcare will remain a top priority as it is crucial for both parents and businesses.
The signing of Senate Bill 1206 marks a significant step towards addressing the issue of expensive and limited childcare options in Idaho. With this investment, many families can now have peace of mind knowing that their children will have access to quality care while they work or attend school.
