IDAHO FALLS ~ Idaho Falls Power, a municipal utility, has recently been recognized as one of the most reliable public power utilities in the nation. The American Public Power Association (APPA) awarded Idaho Falls Power with the 2024 Certificate of Excellence in Reliability, placing them among the top quarter of public power utilities.
This prestigious certificate is given to utilities that demonstrate exceptional reliability in providing electricity to their customers' homes and businesses. Bear Prairie, General Manager of Idaho Falls Power, expressed his gratitude for the recognition and credited his dedicated team for their commitment to maintaining the community's power system and restoring outages quickly, regardless of the conditions.
The APPA calculates the top-performing public power utilities by looking at the average total duration of outages experienced by customers over a five-year period. Among all utilities with the lowest duration of outages, Idaho Falls Power was the only public power utility in Idaho to receive this recognition.
Paul Zummo, Director of Research and Development at APPA, praised these top-performing utilities for their consistent delivery of highly reliable service. He stated that their communities should be proud of their local power providers for earning this well-deserved recognition.

Compared to other types of utilities, nationwide data shows that public power customers experience significantly less time without electricity. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of these top-performing utilities.
Idaho Falls Power has a long history as one of the oldest public power communities in the Pacific Northwest. Their success in providing affordable and reliable electricity can be attributed to their five city-owned hydroelectric projects that supply about one-third of the city's electricity. Additionally, strategic long-range planning with city officials has allowed them to maintain well-maintained infrastructure.
To continue providing reliable and affordable energy to its growing community, Idaho Falls Power is currently constructing a new power generation facility north of town. This plant will provide on-demand energy during peak periods when summer and winter power usage is at its highest. This investment in their own energy production will reduce their dependence on purchasing high-cost electricity from the wholesale market, ultimately benefiting residential customers who currently pay half the national average for electricity.
