IDAHO FALLS ~ Idaho Falls, ID - The City of Idaho Falls has been recognized for its efforts in reducing energy consumption and lowering costs for local taxpayers through energy-efficient lighting upgrades. The city was recently awarded the Idaho Award for Leadership in Energy Efficiency, highlighting its commitment to sustainability.
The award, presented by the Governor's Office of Energy and Mineral Resources, acknowledges the city's success in saving over 711,267 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy across 11 city-owned facilities in 2023 alone. This has resulted in an annual cost savings of more than $50,000 for taxpayers.
Mayor Rebecca Casper expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating that it is an honor for the city to receive such a prestigious award. She also highlighted the benefits of owning its own electric utility and focusing on cost-effective energy conservation programs that are accessible to all businesses and residents.
Idaho Falls Power, the city's electric utility provider, takes pride in its various programs aimed at helping both residential and business customers save energy and money. By improving energy efficiency throughout the city, Idaho Falls Power is able to maintain some of the lowest rates in the nation for all residents.

General Manager Bear Prairie emphasized the impact of small changes such as replacing a single light bulb or upgrading an inefficient heating system to a ductless heat pump. These seemingly minor actions can add up to significant savings when implemented across the entire city. Prairie also noted that these cost-effective conservation projects not only benefit customers but also help reduce expenses for the utility itself.
The statewide impact of energy-saving projects from applicants for this award was impressive, with a total savings of 6,753,766 kWh and over $384,582 in savings. These projects not only contribute to cost savings but also increase resilience and reliability within the region's electric grid.
To further promote energy efficiency among homeowners, landlords, and property management firms, Idaho Falls Power offers an online assessment tool to help identify potential energy-saving programs and rebates. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the utility's website or call (208) 612-8430 for more information.
The City of Idaho Falls' dedication to reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainability has not gone unnoticed. With this recent recognition, it is clear that their efforts are making a significant impact on both the environment and the community's financial well-being.
